Description:
This is a beautiful little Spanish-made folding-trigger pocket revolver called a Velo Dog chambered in a proprietary 6mm Velo Dog cartridge.  This cool little double-action only concealed-hammer revolver is 100% original and all-matching with the factory original finishes still intact.  The Spanish Velo Dog revolvers were originally designed for bicyclists to protect themselves from attacking dogs (or people) in the 1880's and '90's.  The name Velo Dog came from the word for bicycle, velocipede, and dog.  It was advertised that with no leash laws at that time period there were many free-roaming dogs that might see these new-fangled machines rolling along the road and likely attack them.  They were generally small in size and many like this one featured a folding trigger with no triggerguard in order to keep it as easy as possible to carry concealed in a pocket, etc. while riding your bike.  Of course they were popular with many citizens as a form of self defense whether they rode a bicycle or not.  There were many makers in Spain and a multitude of designs, and production of the Velo Dog style revolvers continued for many decades.  This particular example is from an unknown maker but the proofs confirm that it was built sometime between 1921 and 1929, as the Spanish Eibar proofhouse proofs were different before and after this time period.   This Velo Dog has a 1.75" inch long rifled barrel with an overall size of 4.5" inches long by 1" inch or less in width by 3.25" inches tall at the tallest point (from the bottom of the grip to the top of the frame).  It features a color case-hardened solid 1-piece frame with a gloss-blue finished barrel, cylinder, trigger, safety lever, and ejector rod unit.  The action is double-action only, the cylinder is fluted and carries 5 cartridges, the frame is fitted with a safety switch on the left side, the flip-out loading gate is on the right side, and the ejector rod extends and swings out to the right to help clear spent cases.  The folding trigger is long enough for one or two finger operation.  The grips are finely carved genuine horn.  The serial number appears on only one part, the frame, where "2763" is stamped on the bottom flat of the grip frame.  Almost all of the other small parts are stamped with a factory "assembly number" of "87", which is also stamped on the frame under the left grip panel.  As you can see from the pictures, this little revolver has been well cared-for over the last 93 plus years.  The original case colors still show a lot of bright color on the sides with only scattered minor wear showing mainly on the grip straps and some of the high-edges.  The original gloss blue finish on the cylinder, barrel, ejector rod unit, and safety lever is in very good condition showing only minor wear, however most of the blue finish has worn off of the folding trigger.  All of the original factory and proof house markings are still intact, crisp, and legible.  All of the screws in the gun appear to be original with straight and clean slots, and all of the pins in the gun are tight.  The bore in the 1.75" inch barrel is in good condition, showing rifling throughout with only a little frosting mainly in the grooves.  The 5 chambers of the cylinder are bright and clean.  The original checkered horn grips are in excellent condition.  Both grip panels are free from any cracks, chips, or repairs, and both are tight to the frame with no wiggle.  The grip panels match each other perfectly and fit the gun perfectly.  The mechanics of this Velo Dog are in excellent condition and 100% functional.  The only real mechanical wear detectable comes from the friction-fit folding trigger not staying up in the folded position, it will unfold if shaken.  The action is smooth on this revolver and perfectly "in time".  At full-lock with the trigger depressed the cylinder locks up nicely with just a tiny little bit of wiggle.  All of the controls are in perfect working order, including the frame-mounted safety which blocks the trigger from being pulled.  There is no doubt that this Velo Dog would function flawlessly if the correct ammo was found.  The frame is stamped "6mm" which stands for 6mm Velo Dog, however this designation was used along with 5.5 Velo Dog and 5.75 Velo Dog, all of which are the same cartridge!  If you have been looking for a unique and interesting addition to your vintage revolver collection this 1920's Spanish Velo Dog would be a superb choice.  Finding one like this in such nice all-original condition is quite hard as most of these were carried frequently and show a lot of finish wear.  It would be very hard to upgrade from this little beauty.
