This is a High Grade double barrel percussion shotgun made to import for the American Civil War and Frontier market. What is interesting about this example is that it was made not for the gentle shooting in England in which “beaters” were typically marched through the woods on vast estates driving game and birds in front of stationary shooters. Shotguns intended for this type of sport shooting were built less robustly and lighter in weight. On this shotgun, the build was very robust and reinforced for harsh service. This is apparent by the heavy and long upper and lower tangs on the top and bottom of the wrist area of this shotgun. Extra-long tangs, such as these, were used to support this normally vulnerable area of the stock from cracks and damage from rough handling, especially on horseback. Isaac Hollis was a prolific London sporting gunmaker who also made the Pattern 1853 Enfields for both the North and South during the American Civil War. Hollis & Sons started out in the early part of the 19th century with the name of “Hollis Brothers”. It continued under that trade name until 1845 when it was re-named “Hollis Brothers & Co. which continued until 1848, when it became “Hollis & Sheath” after Isaac Hollis took on Isaac Brentnall Sheath as a partner. This continued until 1861 when the firm changed its name to I. Hollis & Sons on the departure of Sheath. Hollis became and remained known as a supplier of pistols and shotguns, and also produced muskets that was possibly used for the North American Indian trade. The overall condition is good.
