Rare CIVIL WAR Antique U.S. REMINGTON Model 1861 NAVY Percussion Revolver
One of Roughly 7,000 “OLD MODEL NAVY” Made in 1862
Here we present an antique U.S. Remington Model 1861 Navy Percussion Revolver made in 1862 at the Remington Armory of Ilion and Utica, New York, likely used throughout the American Civil War. Remington produced their Model 1861 Navy based on their successful and well received Model 1861 Army revolvers. The Army revolvers blazed the trail for the revolver pattern of all future Remington design and the Navy version was no different.
The key to the Remington design over the competing Colt offerings was the connecting bridge across the top of the ammunition cylinder which made for a more robust sidearm on the battlefield. This made Remington revolvers a very popular commodity for both sides of the American Civil War. Production was limited, however, to an estimated 7,000 examples. Production began and ended in 1862 and almost all of these revolvers were produced solely to fulfill U.S. government contracts. In comparison, the Remington Model 1861 Army was produced to the tune of roughly 147,000 examples.
Despite its limited availability, Confederate forces likened the Remington Model 1861 Navy over the Model 1861 Army, to which the Northern Union forces favored. To the South, the lower caliber .36 chambering was the major reason, producing a lower recoil that was more manageable in close ranges and when fired on horseback. The North, however, enjoyed the inherent firepower of their .44 caliber Remington Model 1861 revolvers for its “manstopping” ability. The Remington Model 1861 Navy is also known by the name of “Old Model Navy”.
Remington, like Colt, was in business of arms making long prior to the Civil War. Remington began producing handguns since 1857 when they introduced the Remington Beals Pocket Revolver. With the outbreak of the Civil War, all of the company’s energy became devoted to the military production of both long arms and handguns.
The overall condition is very good. Original patina. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. Both grips are in good shape with an average amount of wear, and cartouche remnants can be seen on the left.
