LONDON Marked Self-defense BELT Pistol
Here we present an engraved antique Belgian Percussion Side Hammer Pocket/Belt Pistol, made circa 1850 in Liege. Liege has long been a manufacturing center for the world’s arms trade. This small type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and into the 19th Centuries in Europe, as well as the colonies that features a large .38 caliber bore that would have been worn on the belt or holstered as it was possibly carried into battle after being privately purchased. This is a neat old pistol and one can easily imagine the sight of its bore would certainly be a deterrent to would be scoundrels. It was of course made primarily for self-defense, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside.
This one has a Liege proof mark on the left side of the German silver frame, yet has been marked with “LONDON” on the top of the octagonal barrel. The latter marking was probably a bit of creative advertising on the maker’s part.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age and contains deep rifling. Good grip, firmly seated at the frame. Sharp engravings on the frame. Liege proofed. Clear markings.
