Description:
General Specs: J. McLay, Year 1790-1810, .44 cal BP, 16oz
Serial Number: NSN

Vintage Firearms is pleased to offer this antique British Superposed Tap Action Flintlock Pistol with Screw-Off Barrels, it was conceived for defensive use and was a marked improvement over the traditional single shot pistols of the period. The gun can fire two single shots or both barrels concurrently depending on the position of the “tap” (the horseshoe shaped extension). Set at the nine o’clock position for the first shot only the flash hole to the upper barrel is exposed to the fire generated by the powder in the rotating pan. With the “tap” in the six o’clock position for the second shot, the flash channel connects to the bottom barrel. If set to the six o’clock position for the first shot, both barrels will discharge. The mechanism was simple and elegant, easy to use and was popular on higher end pocket pistols during the late 18th and first half of the 19th centuries. This fine example is marked J. McLay on the left-hand side plate and exhibits a martial scene on the right-hand side although the engraving has faded with time. McLay is documented as supplying arms and cutlery from his Scottish, Glasgow premises in the first quarter of the 19th Century. Most likely James McLay did not manufacture the pistol himself as many of these guns were produced to order in the factories of Birmingham and London, this example has London Crown V and P proofs on the underside of the action and was probably built and engraved to sell from McLay’s establishment. The pistol has a brass frame and brass barrels all of which are in excellent condition with some legitimate handling and use marks, the bore is likewise in excellent shape with a few fine spots of verdigris. The gun is in working condition with a smooth action, there is a small piece of brass missing from the right-hand side of the action wall, the trigger cocks and releases crisply. The trigger guard, frizzen and cock are blued showing some fading from use. The beakhead walnut grips are in exceptional condition with no shrinkage and still fit perfectly to the action. Overall, this is an excellent example of a tap action flintlock pistol, it appears to have been carried often and carefully cared for. A wonderful authentic piece of mechanical and civil history, in working order and available from Vintage Firearms Inc, A great addition to any historical collection. Thank you for looking.
