This is a handsome military pattern, commercial "scharfschutzen" rifle with double-set triggers, that has an extensively engraved, "ST. GALLEN" marked lock, "J.U. BANZIGER" on the breech-block, and a small engraved escutcheon opposite the lock that reads, "A. Vinnassa-Vinnassa" (probably the name of the original owner of the rifle). The "2"-marked barrel has traces of original blue remaining, with the balance turned to a smooth plum-brown patina with some silvering at the muzzle, as well as some minor freckling towards the breech end, and some small spots of pinprick pitting around the typical Swiss rear sight (a somewhat delicate, sporting/target front sight is also fitted that appears original to the rifle). The lock and hammer have a similar, but slightly more grayer patina, while the receiver has a mottled gray color with some of the original fire blue remaining on the hinge arm on the left side. The wedge-fastened stock has visible "tiger stripe" grain, with numerous small handling marks and blemishes throughout the added varnish finish, as well as a short crack at the top of the lockplate, just ahead of the hammer. The stock furniture and correct, button-headed ramrod have a matching plum-brown patina, and the action is fully functional. This is a very nice example of a high grade Milbank-Amsler Stutzer, and would make a great addition to any collection.
