Description:
The item for sale is a Richard's Conversion of the Colt model 1860 army revolver. It is 44 centerfire, 6 shots and nickel plated. The total production is estimated at 9,000 revolvers. Serial numbers from 1 to approximately 8700 excluding the Richards-Mason arms from approximately 5800 thru 7900. Richards numbers also in the percussion series, from as early as 167000 to 200614. Manufactured from approximately 1873 - 1878. These revolvers formed the initial group of Colt cartridge firearms used by U.S. troops. These pieces saw hard use on the American Frontier, and many reached Mexico and parts further south where the action often was heated and rough. An important addition to any U.S. western collection. The shorter barrel was a common revision for use on the frontier. An important part of U.S. history
This revolver retains approximately 15% of it's original nickel finish.  Varnished one-piece walnut grips were standard. The grips on this revolver reflect years of service with a piece missing on the right at the butt. This is a matching numbers revolver. Mechanically the revolver is very good. The action cycles as Colt intended and is remarkable for a revolver nearly 150 years old. The cylinder scene is still visible on the cylinder.
This is a scarce Colt revolver with only 9000 being produced and the mortality due to the rough service on the American western frontier.
