ENGRAVED Antique FRENCH Double Barrel SxS GOLD INLAID Percussion Shotgun
CANONS de LECLERC, DETAILED GAME SCENE ENGRAVED
Here we present an antique Beautifully Engraved French Percussion Side by Side Shotgun, made circa the mid-19th Century in France. This hunting piece features twin barrels that begin in octagonal form and transition to round. The rib between is marked in gold “Canons de Leclerc”. The locks and trigger guard bear fine engravings characterized by the long strokes that make up the grasses, the fences, and even the tail feathers of the pheasant. Each lock depicts a dog and game birds in a pastoral setting. The trigger guard depicts a hunter and his hunting dog. The hammers and barrel tang have floral scrolls with a tiny game bird depicted on each. These are especially detailed and are a joy to study.
The overall condition is good. Natural patina throughout. Fine, clear engravings and markings. The actions are excellent. The percussion nipples are relatively recent. The bores are smooth and dim. The stock has been repaired about the locks and wrist and is stable.
