English Made, Multi-Case Display Set!
Here we present an antique J.R. Cooper Under Lever Double Barrel Shotgun made circa the mid to late 1870s by Joseph Rock Cooper, of Birmingham. Joseph Rock Cooper was one of the leading shotgun, rifle, and pistol makers working in Birmingham during the mid-19th century. He worked alone from 1838 through 1863 and continued with partners through the early 1880s. Cooper was granted numerous English patents for firearms.
This example features an engraved frame with a pistol grip. The 12 Gauge double barrel is 27 inches in length and the barrel rib reads “DAMASCUS STEEL”. Each lock is beautifully engraved with hunting scenes and reads, “J.R. COOPER” in a banner. Under the trigger guard you’ll find a lever that moves on a swivel and is kept tightly in place—this allows the breech to be opened and closed. Here is a great shotgun that is crisp, attractive, and highly practical.
This set comes with two different display cases, one of which being a leather bound “Godfrey C. Cooper” labeled inside the lid’s interior. The second case is made of wood with a green felt lining and a “David Nixon, Newark Gunmaker” label on the inside of the lid. The wooden case can be mounted on a stand which accommodates the case. Both cases are in good condition and include many accessories as pictured.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong and tight. The bores are smooth and in great shape. Both the forearm and the wrist are sharply checkered.
