Moore “Enfield” Three Band Rifle-Musket, made in 1863 in New York. J.P. Moore was in the gun business in New York beginning in 1822, and the firm existed under several names until sometime around 1870. Moore sold the United States government 1,280 “American Rifles, Long Enfield Pattern” during the Civil War. These muskets were assembled in New York by John P. Moore with a mixture of American made and imported parts to fulfill their U.S. Government contracts. George Moller states that “little is known about his sources, but they included rifles and parts imported from Britain.” Moore was known to do work for Colt’s as well as it is surmised that some of the parts came from Colt’s as well. This rifle-musket is among a few that are recognized as true “American Enfields” and would be a welcome addition to any Civil War collection. Moore “Long Enfields” are described in depth on pages 409-413 of George D. Moller’s book American Military Shoulder Arms Volume III. The lock has the federal eagle type marking and the barrel has commercial British proofs indicating the barrel was imported. The overall condition is good+. Nice even patina. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition, patinated with good rifling. The stock has a noticeable split on the left side that is stable and shows previous repair; the rest of the stock is in good condition.
