About Us: Recently retired, starting to sell off my militaria collection of 30 years. New to this site, but have sold on other sites for years with 100% positive feedback under same user ID. Description: In 1863 the state of Massachusetts contracted with Samuel Norris and William T. Clement of Springfield, Massachusetts for 13,000 rifle muskets, for which the state paid an average price of $13.78. By the end of 1863, 2501 of the rifle muskets had been delivered, the remainder were delivered in 1864. The lockplate of this musket is dated 1863, and the barrel breech is dated 1864, these mixed dates being common as they were being made and delivered in late 1863 and into 1864. I believe this musket continued being used by someone for hunting or shooting well after the Civil War, as it still has an old, but certainly not Civil War era, sling attached. The stock has been sanded and stained dark walnut, so no cartouche is visible,. It had an incorrect ramrod in it, so I have put in a used reproduction ramrod for more accurate display. The barrel is mostly smooth, with decent rifling, but has pitting around the nipple and breech from firing. The lockplate and butt plate also have light pitting, but all markings are quite legible. The action works correctly, holding and releasing when trigger is pressed at all stops. The “VP” and eagle proof marks are visible on the barrel. While I do not see any inspector initials on the left barrel flat, the “L.F.R.” inspector initials usually seen on these muskets can be found on the underside of the barrel. The musket is accompanied by an original bayonet, which makes for a wonderful display. Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition.
