The Massachusetts Arms Company manufactured around 20,000 of these carbines between 1863 and 1865. Serial number 12232. The frame is marked on the right side, “MANUFACTURED BY/ MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS” and the left side “EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27, 1851/DEC 6,1859”. Barrel marked “GWS” by inspector on left side near breech. Two cartouches are plainly visible on the walnut buttsrock.
