This is a Maynard 1863 2nd Model Carbine, chambered for .50 Cal.

The Massachusetts Arms Company manufactured around 20,000 of these carbines between 1863 and 1865. Serial number 12232. The frame is marked on the right side, “MANUFACTURED BY/ MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS” and the left side “EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27, 1851/DEC 6,1859”. Barrel marked “GWS” by inspector on left side near breech. 

Two cartouches are plainly visible on the walnut buttsrock.
