Description:
Serial #13089, .45-60, 26" octagon barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an 1880-made, 2nd Model that has retained 90-92% of the original blue finish along the barrel and replaced magazine tube, with some silvering at the muzzle, as well as along the edges of the barrel facets. Some of the original color case-hardening remains on protected areas of the frame, with the balance having turned to a mottled pewter gray patina. Further original color case-hardening can still be seen on the hammer and lever, and the brass cartridge lifter has toned to a pleasant, yellow-ochre patina. The checkered walnut forend and pistol-grip have beautifully figured, exhibition grade walnut that has numerous small scratches and handling marks spread throughout the original piano varnish finish. The steel shotgun buttplate has a mostly bright patina, with scattered spots of dark freckling as well. The rifle has a sporting type front sight blade, full buckhorn rear sight, and the action is tight, and fully functional. This rifle was sourced in Colorado and was part of a very old collection owned by a WInchester Dealer from the 1920s. A 2022 Cody Data Sheet accompanies the rifle and lists a shipping date of November 18, 1880. The sheet confirms the configuration, with the exception of the magazine tube, which was a half-magazine when the rifle left the factory originally and now has been extended to a full mag. This is a very nice, honest use gun that is in fine condition, and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique
