The Model 51 was very unique in that it used a "hesitating action" which was a combination of the delayed locking action and the simple blow-back action. This unique action uses a two-piece breach and was found be extremely reliable while reducing the felt recoil better than any of the other semi-auto pistols tested. These Remington Model 51's were finished in a gloss blue factory finish and fitted with a 3.5" inch barrel, checkered black hard rubber grips with Remingon UMC monograms, and chambered in either .32 ACP or .380 ACP. This very nicely-made semi-auto pistol was small enough to be an excellent concealed carry / self-defense pistol but large enough for a man to operate the controls on it and grip it comfortably. The 51 featured a grip safety on the rear grip frame that also functioned as a slide release when the slide was locked back and a fresh magazine was inserted, a left-side frame-mounted thumb safety / slide lock for easy field stripping, and a push-button magazine release behind the trigger. This 1st year production (1918) Model 51 is chambered in .380 ACP and is a handsome and honest example of this neat Remington design. This Model 51 has obviously been used but well cared-for. The original factory gloss blue finish still looks great, showing only some superficial wear in the spots you would expect to see it on a 105 year old gun that was carried and used at some point, however little that was. Most of the thinned finish and mechanical finish wear is located on the front grip strap and underside of the frame, along with some mottling around the trigger area on the sides of the frame. The vast mojority of the finish deductions were likely from poor storage and not wiping it down after firing or carrying it. t is in fine all-original condition, retaining 0% original blue, with most loss on the front strap and high edge wear overall. The bore is bright and in excellent condition, with sharp lands and grooves still showing in the rifling from the chamber to the crown of the muzzle. There are a couple of tiny spots where there might be a touch of frosting in the grooves but this bore is excellent and should shoot just as accurately as it did the day it left the factory!! The action is slick, smooth, and precise. The slide to frame fit is superb and all of the controls are in perfect working order. This Remington UMC Model 51 would be an excellent addition to any collection and continue to be an excellent long-term investment as well. Sorry, no box or paper-work. CURIO & RELIC.
