Description:
RARE AND EXCEPTIONAL INDIAN WARS SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1865 1ST ALLIN CONVERSION TRAPDOOR RIFLE W/BAYONET. 40” barrel chambered for the .58 caliber rimfire musket cartridge. The first “Trapdoor” model and only 5000 made in production only one year. All original and in exceptional excellent plus condition which is unusual in itself as most of these were heavily used and are often encountered with shortened barrels. Lock dated 1865 and stamped forward of hammer “EAGLE/U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. Retains nearly all the original case hardening on lock and hammer. Barrel with the original patinated polished metal finish. Stock with all the original finish and two near mint Ordnance Inspector’s cartouches including inventor Erskin S. Allin’s own Ordnance cartouche with interesting foreign government inspector’s wax seal just above it. Perfect working order and excellent bore. Original Bayonet stamped “U.S.” at inside base of blade. Exceptional and best one of these we have ever seen.
