Description:
Antique EVANS NEW MODEL Lever Action MAINE Made .44 “SPORTING MODEL” Rifle

1 of 3,000 SCARCE 28-Round Repeater

Here we present an antique Evans New Model Rifle produced by the Evans Repeating Rifle Company of Mechanics Falls, Maine. Frequently referred to as “one of the most novel repeating rifles of the 19th century”, this .44 caliber centerfire carbine was manufactured between 1873 and 1879, with a total of 12,200 Evans rifles and carbines made, with 3,000 being the “Sporting” model.

The New Model rifle and carbine utilized a revolving type of magazine with a full capacity of 28, .44 caliber metallic rounds loaded through the butt of the 30” long round barrel. The hammer is mounted on the underside of the frame, just ahead of the breech lever and was manually cocked. The frame is rounded at the top and has no cut outs on the side. The forend fits square to the receiver front while the dust cover sits over the loading aperture.

The Evans repeating rifle enjoys the distinction of being the only mass-produced firearm ever attempted in the state of Maine. It was ahead of its time for capacity. It is difficult not to see the resemblance to the Spencer with its contours and tubular magazine fed from the rear.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish/patina. The markings are clear. The action is strong. The bore is bright with great rifling. The stock shows much honest wear and remains solid. A great example of one of the lesser known alternatives to the Winchesters, Marlins, and Whitney Kennedys of the day.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 30 inches.

Caliber: .44 Evans

Overall condition as seen in photos.
