Description:
CIVIL WAR Era Antique FRENCH MUTZIG Arsenal Model 1840 PERC. .75 Cal MUSKET

Civil War Import from France

Here we present an antique French Model 1840 Percussion Musket, manufactured circa the early 1840s at the French State Arsenal at Mutzig. The Mutzig Arsenal, also known as the Impériale de Mutzig, is in the French town of Mutzig and is located in the Château des Rohan (The Castle of Rohan). The castle's history dates back to the 13th century, and after the French revolution, it became a small arms factory, as the castle was disowned by the Rohan family and pillaged during the conflict. In 1799, it was bought by the arms manufacturers, brothers Coulaux of Klingenthal, Bas-Rhin, who, on April 20, 1801, opened their weapons factory in its walls. It was at this factory that a native of Mutzig, Antoine Alphonse Chassepot, fabricated some of his famous rifles, one of the most advanced firearms of its time.

The French Model 1840 is almost identical to the model 1842. During the onset of the American Civil War between 1861 and 1865, many foreign weapons of all kinds were imported by both the Union and the Confederacy. The United States Union Government purchased 25,000 of these French muskets and a great number were imported by Herman Boker & Company of New York, who was a large supplier of foreign arms.

This example is in .75 Caliber with the lockplate marked “Mre Rle / de Mutzig”, indicating manufacture at the French Arsenal located in Mutzig. There are armory proofs and acceptance marks throughout. This one makes a great study in French arsenal markings. This rifle would have been in service during the Crimean War (1853-1856), the Franco-Prussian War (1871), the during the Paris Commune (1871), and likely the American Civil War.

This rifle is also the prototypical Continental Rifled Musket that was imported to the Confederacy during the American Civil War (1861-1865).

The overall condition is good. Gray patina. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and in great shape. The stock is solid and shows much wear. The place in the butt stock where the roundel once was is just now a hole. The bayonet is in good condition.
