Description:
ENGRAVED Antique J.P. SAUER & SOHN .40 Caliber Percussion TARGET Rifle

With RAISED RELIEF CARVED STOCK and ACCESSORIES

Here we present an antique Engraved J.P. Sauer & Sohn Raised Relief Carved Stock Half Stock Percussion Target Rifle, made circa the 1840s to the 1850s in Suhl, Germany. The first Sauer company was founded in 1751 by Lorenz Sauer in Suhl, Thuringia, Germany, this locality being known as Waffenstqadt Suhl in the past because of its many gunmakers. In 1815 Johann-Gottlob Sauer started managing the firm and in 1835 Johann Paul Sauer became manager. It was in 1840 that Johann Paul and his son, Lorenz Sauer created the new name and trademark of J.P. Sauer & Sohn. J. P. Sauer and Sohn is the oldest recorded firearms manufacturer in Germany and is still active today.

This would have been the German precursor to the Zettler “Turner” Style percussion target rifles made in New York circa the 1850s by Christian Zettler. Christian Zettler emigrated from the German Confederation in the years following the failed Revolution of 1848, as many other Germans did. These were known as the “48ers”. The Revolution embodied classical liberal principals such as democracy, liberty, equality, and were for the unification of the Germanic states that were separate at the time. When they came to the United States, they brought with them their ideals and established Turnverein (Turner) Clubs such as they had in their homeland. These clubs provided an avenue for political and social engagement with other German immigrants, as well as education and physical training like gymnastics and military style drilling and shooting competitions.

The overall condition is very good. Strong action. The bore is bright and nicely rifled. This example sports a solid stock with a nice smooth finish. Wonderfully carved and sharp checking add to the already beautiful aesthetics. Legible markings and finely detailed engravings. Inscribed barrel top. The included ammo box contains a false muzzle, spare front sight, and .40 castings.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 31 inches.

Caliber: .40 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
