Description:
SCARCE Antique Early Production MERWIN & HULBERT .38 SPUR TRIGGER Revolver

.38 M&H Cal. Overlooked 19th Century Arms Company

Here we present an antique Merwin & Hulbert Early Production .38 Caliber Spur Trigger Revolver manufactured circa the late 1870s in New York by the Hopkins & Allen Company with only a few thousand made. Merwin & Hulbert was a firearms dealer that started in 1850s New York, with Joseph Merwin being the main mover. He cycled through several partners and came to hold 50% of the firearms manufacturer Hopkins & Allen. By the 1870s and 80s, Merwin & Hulbert were putting their name on many firearms and actively seeking military contracts, especially in the U.S., apparently none were successful. However, their lack of success was not for lack of a great product. Long overlooked in the collecting world, Merwin & Hulbert pistols are now being compared by collectors to much larger and better known brands like Colt and Smith & Wesson. Some Merwin & Hulbert pistols even have some mechanical improvements over comparable Colts.

As mentioned, it is estimated that only a few thousand of these early production Merwin Hulbert spur trigger revolvers were produced including all calibers. The revolver has the exposed cylinder pin, scoop cylinder flutes, a recoil shield on the right side of the frame with a semi-circular scooped out area to allow for loading cartridges. It features a 3-1/2” barrel and a square butt, all features of the earliest production models. The barrel rib has the two line Hopkins & Allen address and patent dates with the two line Merwin Hulbert address on the left side of the frame and “.38 CAL.” on the right. It is fitted with checkered “dog head” embossed grips.

The overall condition is excellent. Bright original nickel finish. Strong action. The bore is semi-bright in good shape. Legible markings. Both grips contains little wear and remain in very good shape.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-1/2 inches.
