Description: Very Fine David Williamson, New York, Sliding Barrel Single Shot Derringer Pocket Pistol, .41 RF, mfg. 1866-1870. Essentially a breechloading version of Henry Deringer's famous pistols made by Moore's Patent Firearms Company and the National Firearms Company of Brooklyn for inventor David Williamson. While a fair number of these are thought to have been made apparently few survive, fewer still in such fine condition as this example. The barrel retains 70% thinned bluing with faint mottled case color on the hammer. The gun is beautifully engraved throughout in fine flowing New York style scrolls. The brass frame (with integral backstrap and nosecap) and triggerguard retain approximately 85% original silver finish turned black with age. The surfaces are smooth, edges sharp, and engraving crisp. The stock features a checkered butt and shows 95% factory varnish remaining with an attractive unmolested appearance and rich color. There is a very fine tight grain check, or hairline crack, across the back of the grip which is stable and does not go all the way through to the front. This is extremely common on this model and Norm Flayderman even notes it in his guide as a weak point and suggests it may be the reason for the gun's low survival rate. Engraved arrow along the top of the barrel with crystal clear Williamson's Patent address and serial number "6747" stamped on the barrel and frame. Original German silver blade front sight and barrel release button. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. The barrel securely slides forward and snaps tightly shut without play. Excellent bore with bright, clean, and sharp rifling and only very light blackpowder frosting. A fine representation of the model and best we have offered in many years.
