Description:
**SOLD**     This is a very cool British Military-issue Webley Mark VI (6) revolver made by the RSAF Enfield factory in 1924 complete with an original RAF WW2 belt rig.  This Webley Mark 6 appears to have been thru one arsenal rework likely in the late 1920's or early 1930's prior to being put into inventory and then re-issued during WW2 when the British Army needed every handgun they had to arm their soldiers with.  The Enfield / Webley Mark VI was an excellent combat revolver, very well made, durable, reliable, accurate, and had good knock-down power even with the original chambering of .455 Webley.  The DA/SA action in these revolvers was simple and sturdy, and they top-break design with auto ejection of cartridges made it quick to reload.  Unlike the Mark V, the Mark VI was designed with a full-size square-but style grip, which was much preferred by most of the soldiers that had the opportunity to carry both models.  The Mark VI would serve the British Military well throughout WW2 all the way to the very end.  After hostilities ended, the Mark VI revolvers that were issued were put back into arsenal storage until sometime in the 1950's when the British government began to sell them off as surplus both overseas here in the States and elsewhere.  As mentioned earlier, the Mark VI was chambered in .455 Webley but rechambered by most importers in the U.S. to take the much more readily available and inexpensive .45 ACP cartridges.  This was important for commercial sales as .455 Webley ammo was very hard to find and expensive in the U.S.. These revolvers can be loaded with loose rounds or with half-moon or full-moon clips, however, in order for the automatic ejector to work properly when the top-break action is opened, moon clips are required as the .45 ACP cartridge is rimless.  When the gun was sold as surplus it received the BNP proofs from England before being shipped out, and then "England" was stamped on the frame when it arrived in the U.S. as all weapons had to be stamped with the origin country at this time.  Later on in 1968 the import laws changed and the import stamps we know today were added as a requirement.  Fortunately, this Enfield Webley Mark VI was imported prior to 1968 and does not have a modern-style import mark.
This particular Webley is in very good condition overall and is in excellent mechanical condition.  It is serial number 12468 made in 1924 by the Enfield firm who was contracted to build this model along with Webley & Scott.  It is an all-matching gun and all-original except for the grips which are old aftermarket replacements.  The barrel assembly, frame, and cylinder all carry the same serial number.  The arsenal-applied matte "military" blue finish on this Webley is still intact and attractive, showing only minor to moderate wear and thinning in the places you would expect to see it on a combat-used sidearm, the front and rear grip straps, the triggerguard surfaces, and the high edges.  Almost all of the markings are still legible with the lone exception being the bottom half of the Enfield logo on the right side of the frame, which is still legible but requires some magnification and light to read.  The bore in the 6" inch barrel is superb, mirror-bright with strong rifling and no visible pitting or imperfections.  The 6 chambers of the cylinder are equally as pristine.  The aftermarket wooden grips are in very good shape and fit the gun nicely with no wiggle.  The proper grips would be checkered black hard rubber and not numbered to the the gun.  These can be found on Ebay from time to time and sell for $25 to $40 per pair.  This gun is definitely good enough to deserve the original grips, but there are not any currently for sale on Ebay or we would have replaced them! The action on this Mark VI is slick, smooth, and in perfect time.  At full-lock with the trigger pulled all the way back and kept there, the cylinder locks up nice and tight just as it was designed to.  It is similar to a number of vintage Colt revolvers in that way; with just the hammer cocked the cyinder has more play in it than you would like, however full-lock actually occurs after the trigger is pulled to the rearmost position and the hammer drops.  It does not matter whether it is worked in single or double-action, fast or slow, ite action in this Enfield Webley stays "in time" no matter how it is operated.  All of the controls are in perfect working order as well, and the top latch is very tight and the lever to open it still has stout spring pressure keeping it closed. This Enfield-made Webley should function smoothly and reliably for decades to come.
As mentioned previously and pictured, this British revolver comes complete with an original Royal Air Force belt rig consisting of an original 1943 dated holster, a 1941 dated ammo pouch, a WW2 issuebelt, and a WW2-issue pistol lanyard.  All of these are constructed of the pale bluematerial used by the RAF during this time.
All in all, this is an extremely nice Webley Mark VI and rig that would be an excellent addition to any military or WW2 weapons collection.  This one could be enjoyed as both a long-term investment AND at the shooting range.
