Description:
PENNSYLVANIA RIFLE WORKS Half-Stock .45 Cal. Percussion TARGET / LONG RIFLE

With MUZZLE PLUG and AMMUNITION CAN w/AMMUNITION

Here we present an antique Pennsylvania Rifle Works Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century. The Pennsylvania Rifle Works was located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was owned by George and Robert Dunlap and was in operation between 1837 and 1858. It has an “S. Smith” signed barrel.

Its stout octagonal barrel is in .45 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many makers’ names of the so-called Kentucky long rifles have been lost over time. This rifle is one such example.

“S Smith” is marked atop the barrel. “PENNSYLVANIA/RIFLE WORKS” is marked on the lock. A muzzle plug and an ammo can are included. The can contains .45 bullets and an ill fitting target sight.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is semi-bright and has retained nice rifling. The bore is sleeved. Very good stock with a smooth finish and less than expected wear. Legible markings. No sights are present. This example weighs in at just over 14lbs.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 38 inches.

Caliber:  .45 Percussion
