Description:
CASED & ENGRAVED Belgian Double Barrel BACK ACTION 16 g. HAMMER Shotgun C&R

Nice Turn of the Century Fowling Gun

Here we present a C&R Engraved Belgian Double Barrel Side by Side Back Action Shotgun, made circa the turn of the 20th Century likely in Liege, Belgium. After the 1890 Tariffs were passed into law in the United States, any shotgun costing more than $5 was charged exorbitant import duties. So, to maintain their businesses, makers produced cheap shotguns for export to the United States. Consequently, cheap double barrels flooded the markets with mail order, hardware, and sporting goods stores in the late 1800s to early 1900s.

These locks were called “back action” because the mainspring hangs behind the tumbler. The back action is often used in double shotguns and rifles & occasionally in single barrel shotguns where the need for strength requires as little steel as possible be removed from the bar of the action. This lock was popular on guns made in St. Louis, New York, California, Ohio, England and Belgium. Back Action percussion locks were a “late” developed style of lock. Used primarily on the hardware store line of guns, these locks did, however, show up on some better pieces in the mid-to-late 1800′s. Back Action locks are extremely fast and are often used on competition, squirrel, and light-weight boy’s rifles.

This would have been primarily a sporting firearm designed for hunting fowl or taken out on a Saturday afternoon for a little skeet shooting!
