Description:
Serial #2270C, .303 British, 21" barrel with a very good bore that has a small amount of mild freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome carbine with an unmarked receiver, and has 75-80% of the original blue remaining, and an overall dark plum-brown patina on the balance. Some further silvering and gray fading is present on the muzzle, as well as some of the high edges and projections. The lever has crisp "WD" and military proofs with some original color case-hardening still visible, and some mild freckling on the balance. The wood is in very good-near fine condition with minor handling marks scattered about the original oil finish. There is a crisp Ulster Volunteer Force stamp and rack number on the right side of the buttstock: "U.V.F. / (Red Hand of Ulster) / FOR GOD AND ULSTER". The UVF were a Unionist, Protestant militia formed in 1913 to combat Irish Republicanism and the IRA. The outbreak of WW1 saw most of its membership enlist in the British Army, but fierce post-war sectarian clashes caused the group's revival in 1920. Eventually, the UVF was absorbed into the Ulster Special Constabulary, the reserve police force of Northern Ireland. This is a great example of a UVF-marked gun from the time of the Irish War of Independence, in fine-near excellent condition, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. Antique
