Description:
J.M. MARLIN Model 1893 Lever Action .30-30 WCF C&R Hunting/Sporting Rifle

Marlin’s First SMOKELESS POWDER Rifle

Here we present a C&R J.M. Marlin Model 1893 Rifle in .30-30 WCF, made circa the turn of the century in New Haven, Connecticut. Marlin Firearms was founded in the 1870s by John Marlin and was one of Winchester’s biggest competitors for the lever action market in the late-19th and into the 20th Century. Marlin produced a large assortment of firearms such as lever-action rifles, pump-action shotguns and single shot rifles. The Model 1893 represents Marlin’s first smokeless powder lever action rifle. It features a solid top frame with side ejection and a smooth action. The barrel is a medium weight octagon of 26 inches.

In 1905, the Model 1893 nomenclature changed to “Model 93”, making this example pre-1905. Saddle rings were optional, and barrels were stamped “Special Smokeless Steel.” Some shooters still preferred black powder loads, though, and that same year Marlin came out with a limited run of Model 93s chambered for .32-40 and .38-55 and stamped “For Black Powder Only.” In time, the Model 93 became the Model 36, and then the 336, which remains in the line today, although, due to recent ownership changes, the lever-actions are made now in Ilion, N.Y., not Connecticut.

As with many early Marlins, serial number records for the Model 1893 are incomplete. The inletted “Bull’s Eye” in the stock began in 1921. The barrels of the pre-1924 Model 93s is stamped “Marlin Firearms Company.” Post-1924 barrels were stamped “Marlin Firearms Corporation.” This rifle was one of the most popular Marlin lever-action models ever made with over one million model 1893s manufactured. This one is in great shape and remains a classic!
The overall condition is very good. Original blue finish and silvered case colors. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped and filled. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with great rifling. The stock shows use and remains solid. A really handsome, classic rifle with an octagonal barrel!
