This is one of only two known examples of this model chambered in .30 US, and retains 95-97% of the original blue on the barrel, breechblock, and hammer. Some mild silvering is present on the muzzle, and there is gray fading on the top surfaces of the hammer and block. The frame retains a commensurate amount of the original, vibrant color case-hardening, and the breech and hammer pins retain most of their original bright fire blue finish as well. The walnut stock, forend, and handguard have small handling marks and minor surface bruises marring the original varnish finish, but are otherwise in fine condition. This is a very late production gun (only about 1100 were made before the transition to the Model 1897), and may very well be the last example made going by serial number. While the .30 Krag was never a cataloged chambering for the Model 1896, but the example in the Remington museum is also chambered in the US cartridge, making this the second known example, and the only one that is available to purchase. This is a true rarity, and would make a fine complement to any collection of high grade Remingtons, or single-shot military rifles.
