Description:
c1840s JOHN PROBIN of ENGLAND Large Pistol .50 Caliber Smoothbore Octagon

“Maker to His Majesty”

Here we present a Large Percussion Pistol in .50 Caliber by John Probin of England. This pistol features a 10-1/4 inch octagonal barrel in .50 caliber smooth bore, a half-length stock tipped with horn, and engraved pommel, trigger guard, and lock. This one has seen some use with worn checkering on the grip, along with a deep gash. The barrel is marked “PROBIN/LONDON” and “Maker to His Majesty”. The lock is marked “John Probin/LONDON”. John was one of a multigenerational family of gunmakers who had shops in both Birmingham and London.

The overall condition is good. Dark, mottled patina throughout. The markings are clear. The action is strong—only has a full-cock notch. The hammer has some movement back and forth and side to side and has a crack at the spur. The bore is dim and patinated. The stock is quite worn though still solid.

Barrel is 10 ¼”.

Caliber: .50

Overall condition as seen in photos.
