Description:
VERY EARLY 1881 OCTAGON RIFLE IN DESIRABLE .45-70 CALIBER, #31XX, MADE 1881-82. A fine, honest example that has not been abused. 28" octagon barrel and full magazine are mostly aged gray with some minor thin blue and fine markings including the "45 Govt" barrel stamping. Original buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and Rocky Mountain blade front sight. Receiver shows some good aged blue on about half of the right side with the balance mostly an aged and uncleaned gray/brown. Dust cover intact. Butt stock and forearm are not cracked and fit well, showing only normal handling and retains the original smooth steel shotgun butt plate. Tight action and a fine bore that is a bit dark with strong rifling and what appears to be some light scattered leading in the grooves- I don't believe it is pitting as the lands are fine.  A good cleaning is needed. This is a big, early frontier Marlin with an honest appearance in a desirable caliber.
