Description:
This custom rifle was built on a Winchester Model 1885 Falling Block rifle (dated 1893) by an unknown gun-maker. Gun features a heavy barrel stamped C.E. Bryant. Wood is solid showing only a few light use marks and scuffs with good original finish. Black diamond with white dot has been inletted on right buttstock. Bottom of forend has been plugged long ago and may not be original. Original bore is also very good with some blue loss at muzzle and on left side of receiver. There are also a couple areas of light oxidation on the barrel. Barrel was originally a .22 Hornet and has been X'd out after being bored to .219 Wasp. Bore is bright and excellent. Butt pad has dry rotted from age with "White Line" and ribbing still visible. Function appears excellent. The .219 Donaldson Wasp was invented by "Wildcatter" Harvey Donaldson in the 1930's as a benchrest classic. Donaldson was born in Fultonville NY in 1883 and worked as a machinist and toolmaker by trade but loved shooting. In the 30's he experimented with the .22 caliber cartridge. The Wasp is based on a .30-30 Winchester case necked down to a .290" outside diameter. Complete with 40 brass cartridges, die set, case trimmer and box of L.E Wilson gages, This is an interesting gun with a unique history... .219 Donaldson Wasp
