Payment Types Accepted: Bank to bank wire transfer (preferred), or bank cashier's check only Description: EXTREMELY RARE Pre War Winchester Model 70 "Pencil Barrel" 375 H&H with 4 digit S/N 8418 sold in 1937. It has been stated in Roger Rule's superb reference book that fewer than ten .375s were ever made with this standard weight barrel. Dean Whitaker's book suggested that up to 100 may have been assembled onto actions. My extensive experience with this model over many years would tend to have me leaning more toward Mr. Rule's estimate! Whatever the number, it is at least among the very rarest possible Model 70s cataloged, if not the rarest. Nearly all subsequent 375s sold after these first few in 1937 had much heavier barrels. The metal condition on this rifle is superb given its age, showing about 97% original blue throughout. The rear receiver bridge is undrilled. The wood shows numerous light handling marks, but nothing distracting and no cracks inside or out. I think 95% would be a fair estimate of wood finish. The standard weight barrel channel is free of any alteration and the stock wears an original and still soft factory recoil pad as issued on all 375s. The rear sight provision is the early and rare Lyman 57W receiver sight which was a factory option at the time. This sight was designed to clear the wood completely so there is none of the usual damage underneath it from the base or elevation screw. It is apparent that there has never been a 22g rear sight installed as evidenced by the lack of any elevator track whatsoever on top of the barrel. The barrel's rear sight dovetail has a factory correct Lyman 12S filler blank, although this one is of somewhat later production with the rounded and more streamlined edges. The barrel is 24" with an excellent bore. All mechanical functions are silky smooth and working correctly. A very special and conservatively priced rifle for the advanced collector.
