Here we present an antique London Retailer Marked London Proofed Colt New Line .32 Caliber Centerfire Revolver, made in 1881 in Hartford, Connecticut. A single action revolver, this small pocket revolver was one of a number of inexpensive handguns produced by Colt from 1873 to 1884. The “New Line” was Colt’s first production model handgun chambered for .32 caliber.
The New Line series of revolvers, including all calibers, was a single action pocket revolver introduced by the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1873 and continued through 1884. Two years after the Colt House Revolver, a year after the Colt Open Top, and almost simultaneously alongside the Colt Peacemaker, the Colt New Line was one of the first metallic cartridge, rear-loading revolvers manufactured by Colt.
This revolver was designed to be a small but potent self-defense revolver for stowing in one’s pocket in the 19th Century. Spur Trigger “Suicide Special” manufacture was fierce during this time, and Colt struggled to compete against the countless small shops making very similar, less expensive revolvers, though not necessarily of the same quality. The Colt remained a steady, reliable force in firearms for much longer than the rest. This revolver features 5 shots of .32 Centerfire fitted to a 2-1/4” long round barrel and a handsome wizened nickel finish with hard rubber grips. About 22,000 were produced in this caliber.
This example is London proofed and has a London retailer marked top strap “S.W. SILVER & Co. CORNHILL LONDON.” This little revolver would have come in very handy on the busy streets of London during the tumultuous late 19th century.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. Both grips contain an average amount of handling and remain seated firmly. Sharp markings. Here is a very handsome and collectible specimen of the Colt New Line .32!
