From the Collection of Miller Bedford of OGCA!
Here we present an antique 1750s Era G. Earle Marked Flintlock Fowling Piece, manufactured likely in the Colony of Massachusetts circa 1755. It is previously of the collection of Don Mericle, a history enthusiast and collector of all sorts from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. He acquired these pieces from Miller Bedford, best known for his seminal role in the establishment of the Ohio Gun Collector’s Association in 1937. He himself was dealing in collectible and antique firearms even prior to that.
This one is equipped with a very long 53-3/8 inch barrel with a .54 caliber smooth bore. It would have been an essential tool in the colonies, both for putting food on the table as well as defending the homestead or village. This is precisely the type of weapon many had when the American Revolutionary War began. This one is very long and slender with a full-length stock. It is in fantastic shape for its age.
This gun includes a statement from Miller Bedford of The Bedford Company, the seller, in New London, Ohio. He attributes the gun to Colonial Massachusetts circa 1755 and says that it was “the earliest name gun I’ve ever known.”
As for the cannon ball, he states that it is from the War of 1812 era and dug up 15 miles east of New London, Ohio. The cannon ball is about 2-5/8 inches in diameter and weight 4 lbs. 6 ounces.
The overall condition is near fine for its age. Excellent action. Good, smooth bore. Very nice striped maple stock (slight chipping at the muzzle). “G. EARLE” is signed atop the barrel.
