Martial Sized Horse or Belt Pistol
Here we present an antique Engraved Flintlock Pistol by Duponceau, made circa the mid-1700s in France. Duponceau appears to be French. Though several of his works are known, there is very little out there written on this gunmaker.
This large-bore pistol would have primarily been intended for use as a self-defense firearm, though it is also likely to have been carried into battle by an officer or soldier who privately purchased it for himself prior to heading off to war. It is a fairly large sized flintlock and could have been tucked into one’s belt while traveling the countryside.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock is nicely carved and remains solid. The barrel is partially fluted. The brass hardware is cast and engraved.
