“Le Big” Model Up Close & PERSONAL Punch Gun
Here we present an antique “Turbiaux Le Protector” Palm Pistol, designed in 1882 by Jacques Edmond Turbiaux produced circa the same time in France. J.E. Turbiaux was an armorer and inventor who lived in Paris from 1880 through 1895. This was a very interesting design that dared to venture away from the conventional style of handgun in that day. It was made to be very simple and small enough to fit inside the pocket and the hand, with only part of the barrel exposed. The distinctive feature on this little revolver making it an original Turbiaux gun is the external sliding safety, which the guns made under the U.S. patent didn’t have.
As mentioned, the Turbiaux Le Protector, or Protector Palm Pistol, was first patented and built in France in 1882 by Jacques Turbiaux. Turbiaux’s original pistol was either a 10 shot, .22 centerfire, which was called the Small model, or a 7 shot chambered in 8mm, as this one is, which was referred to as the Big model. On March 5, 1883 it was patented in the United States as “The Protector” by the Minneapolis Firearms Company. Peter H. Finnegan of Austin, Illinois bought the patent in 1892 and founded the Chicago Fire Arms Co. to make and market the pistols. The Minneapolis Firearms Company made only 3,000 of these before selling the patent to Finnegan, who produced a total of 12,000 under the Chicago Firearms brand.
This gun features a 7 shot, rotating, turret-style magazine housed inside the disc-shaped frame. A cover is removable on one side to load and unload. Its palm-sized, squeeze trigger and lack of sights demonstrates how this was an up close and personal weapon, though it does have a rifled barrel. One could point and fire at distance, but could also punch their opponent with it, the palm of the hand slamming the squeeze trigger home with the impact. All in all, a truly unique design of the time.
The overall condition is good. The action is strong. Bright bore. The left side plate is missing, while the right has a few cracks. Numbers match. Here is an interesting piece of French firearms curiosa from the late-19th Century!
