Description: This 1873 rifle has a very rare and unique configuration that is confirmed by the included factory letter. The great majority of Winchester 1873 rifles were ordered with the standard 24" barrel length, and out of all 73's made, only about 3.4 percent were chambered in .38 caliber. All special- length barrels are rare, but certain lengths are especially rare such as the twenty-six and twenty-two inch lengths, being that they were so close to the standard 24" length. The combination of the very rare twenty-six inch barrel length in the scarce .38 caliber makes this gun especially interesting to Winchester collectors. This rifle was shipped from the warehouse on June 7th, 1888 and has a 26" Octagon Barrel, Full Magazine, Crescent Butt, Plain Trigger, and Straight Grain Walnut Stocks. The sights are a fixed blade front and sporting rear. The condition of the gun is quite good with much bluing still remaining on the barrel, magazine tube and receiver which is generally turning brown to light gray on the high spots, but retaining some deep blue in the more protected areas. The wood to metal fit is still very tight on both the forend and the buttstock. The wood has dings and dents typical of carry and use, but no cracks or chips. There is a small number "19" painted on the right side of the buttstock near the buttplate, likely a rack number from some point in the gun's life. The bronze elevator is marked with a worn down ".38 Cal." and has a pleasant mellow, aged patina. The screws are all in excellent condition and the action is tight and functions perfectly. The bore is very good with crisp rifling and no rings or bulges. Overall, this rifle is a handsome and unique variant of the 1873 Winchester that must have been ordered and owned by a rifleman who wanted the assurance that he could reach out past the range of a standard Winchester to defend the ranch or put meat on the table. It will be a fine addition to any collection of Winchester rifles. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .38-40 Winchester Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1873 Serial Number: 264XXX Barrel Length: 26 |
