BIRMINGHAM Made SELF DEFENSE Pistol
Here we present an antique B. Woodward Percussion Pistol, made circa 1838-1842 in Birmingham, England. Benjamin Woodward was a gunmaker in Birmingham, England between 1838 and 1842, and his son ran the business from 1842 until it ceased operation in 1883. This pistol features a large .50 caliber “manstopping” bore that would have been worn on the belt or holstered. This is a neat old pistol and one can easily imagine the sight of its gaping bore would certainly be a deterrent to would be scoundrels.
This self-defense pistol would have been most at home in the pocket or belt of anyone in the busy cities of Britain during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s.
The overall condition is good. Excellent action. The bore is in good shape for its age and smooth. This example sports a solid stock/grip with nice checkering and average wear. Legible markings. Engraved lock and hammer. The ramrod tube is presently detached from the barrel rib.
