Description: Guns Listing ID: 891459 Here we have a very scarce Lee Enfield Royal Irish Constabulary Carbine in .303 British that is all-original. This weapon started life as a Lee Enfield Mark 1 cavalry carbine built by Enfield in 1898. Once the Lee Enfield and Lee Metford Mark 1 cavalry carbine was considered outdated and the British moved on to the SMLE, they had a large stockpile of these carbines to sell. A large number were sold to New Zealand but there were many more to dispose of. A deal was struck with Ireland to purchase 10,000 of these carbines however they had to be modified to mount the standard sword bayonet of the Lee Enfield No.1. The arsenal at Enfield converted these carbines for Irish use by splicing in a larger section of wood on the forend to mount a steel nosecap that would integrate the bayonet lug, and then a small collar was added to the muzzle to fit the barrel porperly into the bayonet muzzle ring. The mgazine was a short model that would hold 6 rounds, and the bolts were flattened to make mounted carry easier. The rear barrel bands were eliminated, and the leather sight cover holes were filled in the stocks. Finally, sling swivels were fit to the carbine at each end and the conversion was complete. Once these were completed Enfield would stamp a circular cartouche on the right side of the butt stamped with \"Birmingham\" and the date of the conversion completion. Once delivered to Ireland, it was then accepted into Royal Irish Constabulary service in March of 1904 whereupon a brass disc was inletted into the buttstock beside the Enfield cartouche with the acceptance date \"3‚‚04\" and the R.I.C. inventory number \"R.I.C SOLD Manufacturer: LEE-ENFIELD Model: ROYAL IRISH CONSTABULARY CARBINE RARE!
