Cut Down for a Lighter, Handier Weapon
Here we present an antique Sidelever Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun, made circa the late 1880s in Liege, Belgium for import to the United States. Several Belgian companies made and imported many shotguns to American hardware stores, mail-order houses, and gun shops in the United States between the 1880s and 1914.
The overall condition is fair. This shotgun’s barrels were shortened to 22 ½” during the period of use for use as a coach gun. The right action is strong, but the left will not hold full-cock and the hammer itself moves side to side. The shotgun appears to have been used right side only for some significant time as the left bore shows less wear than the right, which is dark and textured throughout. Barrel rib is marked “EL PASO, 1888” and “WELLS FARGO & CO. EXPRESS”. Solid stock showing much use.
