Description:
Offered here is a nice-looking Model 1841 Naval Cutlass with Scabbard made by Ames in the first year of production.  The first contract for these cutlasses was signed in late 1841, and the first swords were produced in 1842.  The cutlass is patterned after the Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword, having the same brass fish scale style grip with eagles on each side of the pommel, but with a large “D” guard for extra hand protection.  The cutlass has a relatively short blade to allow for fighting in close quarters as may be found on the deck of a ship.  These cutlasses are relatively rare as only 6600 of them were made by the time production ceased in 1847, and they are particularly difficult to find with an original riveted style scabbard.  One side of the blade is clearly stamped “N. P. AMES/CABOTVILLE/MASS” and the other side has “U.S.N./1842”. When found it appeared to have been untouched and neglected for years.  I cleaned off the light coat of active surface rust that was covering the blade with a non-scratch pad and gun oil.  The blade remains somewhat dark and gray, and the brass hilt retains its dark aged patina.  The rare scabbard remains relatively strong and despite missing the belt loop and the very tip at the end, presents very well.  Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition.  Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states.  Shipping charge $35 towards cost of Priority Mail with full insurance.  Three day return privilege, buyer pays return shipping.
