Description:
1876 Winchester Rare First Year, First Model "Open Top" Rifle Cal .45-75, 28" Barrel (1876 Manufacture!)

This is a fine example of a First Year, First Model Winchester 1876 "Open Top" Rifle in the original early caliber of .45-75 WCF.
This rifle has the correct characteristics of a First Model, being primarily: The lack of a dust cover over the ejection port, the larger hammer behind the spur, and the thicker toe on the buttplate. Also, the bolt face has a firing pin bushing as did all before aproximately #12,000. The serial number 540 is hand engraved in the lower tang. The front sight has a german silver blade, and the rear is an early sporting sight with checkering on the rear edges.
This rifle retains almost all of it's original blue on the barrel and magazine tube, and approximately 90% on the receiver, which is uniformly mellowing into a plum/brown color. Some evidence of faded case color remains on the hammer.
The wood is in very good condition with almost all original varnish remaining with just a few dings, no cracks, and fits very well to the metal. There is an original 4 piece steel cleaning rod present in the buttstock.
The 28" round barrel has a bore in good condition with strong lands and grooves, no rings or bulges and even frosting throughout. The action functions quite smoothly and locks up tight. The screws are all in fine original condition .
The factory letter confirms the standard length round barrel and plain trigger.
This is one of 1429 1876's made in the first year of production, with all the correct features of a very early "Centential" Winchester. This is quite likely the earliest 1876 Winchester for sale currently!
