British Enfield Infantry Small Arm
Here we present an antique British Commercial Pattern 1859 Percussion Musket, made in England circa 1862. This example is a smooth-bore musket introduced for the Indian native infantry after the Indian Mutiny between 1857 and 1859, when the provision of rifled arms was discontinued for Indian troops. The Pattern 1859 Musket differed from the Pattern 1858 in having a heavier barrel and a simplified foresight. Something that was unusual for weapons destined for the Indian Army, 14,000 of these muskets were manufactured at Enfield and hence had interchangeable parts. The left side of the barrel has London commercial proofs. The lock has the royal crown cipher at the tail and the front of the lock is marked “1862/TOWER”.
The overall condition is good. Even patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and patinaed. The walnut stock has a split around the top of the wrist; otherwise, solid.
