1800s ITALIAN Antique Long Barreled Smoothbore Musket .73 PERCUSSION Fowler
Engraved and with Gold Maker’s Marks; Naples
Here we present an antique Italian Smoothbore Musket by Zito, made circa the 1840s. We believe that this was made in the Naples area of Southern Italy. This piece features a full-length stock with beautiful select wood that has been hand-checkered. The barrel is a long 44 ¼ inches with a .73 caliber smooth bore. The barrel is multifaceted and transitions to round. Bead-like front sight with a subtle gutter rear sight built into the barrel tang. The lock, trigger guard, and the tangs of the barrel and butt plate are engraved. The lock is maker marked with a horse over the name “ZITO” and the barrel is proof marked and all filled with gold.
This would have been a versatile gun that could have handled shot for fowl hunting or a large .73 caliber ball for martial purposes. It is certainly a few steps above simply a utilitarian piece of hardware.
Original finish. The action is excellent. Good bore. There is a through crack around the wrist as seen in the photos. Gold inlays atop the barrel and on the lock. The grain structure of the stock is beautiful! Traditional floral engravings on the trigger guard, hammer, and lock.
