Ornate, Engraved Brass & Iron Miquelet Sidearm!
Here we present an antique Balkan Miquelet Flintlock Pistol, made circa 1800. The miquelet was an early and sturdy form of flintlock popular throughout Europe and the Ottoman Empire from the seventeenth into the late-19th Century. These were typically all-metal, made from brass, bronze or iron, and feature a peculiar aesthetic with typically a pointed pommel like the one you see here. The pommel was a weapon in itself. This was a period of turmoil throughout the Ottoman Empire and it was during this period that Greece wrested its independence from the Turks.
The overall condition is very good. Patina throughout. The action is excellent and still very strong. The bore is patinated and smooth and in good condition. The brass stock is engraved throughout with various scrolls and other motifs. The trigger guard is absent. A very neat piece from the eastern Mediterranean Sea!
