This musket was designed as a single shot .58 caliber rifled muzzleloader. Lockplate is dated 1863. Markings are relatively clear on the lockplate but barrel markings are very poor from heavy pitting. Bore is about good and would benefit from a good cleaning. There is light roughness throughout with visible rifling. Metal surfaces are an aged dull gray patina with some pitting around the breech. Original sights. Walnut stocks are in good condition. A "3" stamped just ahead of the "US" marked buttplate. Ramrod is present. The Springfield Armory supervised the manufacturing and distribution of the Model 1861 muskets. To fulfill shortages, production was sub-contracted to several private manufacturers; Colt, LG&Y, E.G Lamson, and Amoskeag all produced these Special Contract muskets through the entire war 1861-65. The "Special" Model 1861 contract represented a transition from the Model 1861 design and incorporated many of the features eventually adopted in the Model 1863 regulation, namely the contoured hammer, flat bolster and removal of band springs. This is a nice historical example of an early Civil War musket. Leroy Merz Antique Firearms specializes in antique and vintage Winchesters and other fine American firearms.
