Description:
RARE .45-70 GOVT REMINGTON-KEENE Magazine Bolt Action Rifle   c1880 Antique

Early American Bolt Action; Only 5,000 Made!

Here we present an antique Remington Keene Bolt Action Tubular Magazine Rifle, manufactured circa the early 1880s in Ilion, New York and chambered in .45-70 GOVT. This Remington–Keene is an early American bolt-action rifle of which less than 5,000 total were produced. These rifles saw several military trials in a time when the US military had a difficult time moving away from the rugged and durable single shot designs of the Springfield Trapdoors and the Remington Rolling Blocks chambered for the same cartridge. The Army tried some, the Navy bought a few as ship’s rifles, and the US Department of the Interior purchased several hundred carbines to be used by the Indian Police on reservations, but this was about the extent of government purchases. By this time, it was evident that repeaters were the way of the future, but the firearms industry was on the cusp of yet another breakthrough: that of small-bore, high-velocity cartridges. Ultimately, the US would adopt the Krag-Jorgenson in .30-40 for a short time—long enough to use them in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection—before moving onto the Model 1903 and the .30-03 cartridge, then shortly after the .30-06. It was a time of great change and as advanced as these rifles seemed at the time, companies could hardly keep up with all the new ideas. Though the US government did not adopt them en masse they were still great guns, very capable for hunting just about anything by the standards of the day. These would have competed on the market with Winchester Model 1876s, Marlin Model 1881s, Whitney-Kennedys, Whitney-Burgess-Morses, and even Remington-Lees: all repeaters in similar cartridges. This does not even get into all the single shot options that Sharps, Peabody, and the like offered.

Rifles were manufactured for civilian sales chambered for .45-70, .40-60 Winchester, and .43 Spanish (.43-77).

The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The stock is in great shape with little wear. This is a fantastic and rare bolt action repeating rifle geared toward the hunter and the frontiersman.
