The Barbar family got its start in England when Louis Barbar, a Huguenot from Poitou, France, fled persecution after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685. Louis (or Lewis) was a gunmaker who became Gentleman Armorer to King George I & II. His son James apprenticed with him and then took over the business in 1741 upon his father’s death. James made flintlock firearms until his death in 1773. This set of pistols is matching and would have been sold together to be carried by an officer. The silver hallmarks on the pommels date this one to 1779 in Birmingham and certify .925 purity of Sterling silver. Each of these also has a silver thumb plate and feature engraved locks and carved stocks. Acorn finials on the trigger guards. A very nice detail is the skeletonized side plates, which are also engraved, that give these pistols a light and slender feel while still packing .62 caliber bores. Overall length is 15-1/8” with 9” barrels. The overall condition is very good. Patinated. The actions are excellent. The bores are smooth and patinated. The stocks show honest use and there are some minor splits to each; solid on the whole. The hallmarks on the pommels feature a lion, anchor, “G” within a shield, and “CF” within a rectangle (this last a maker’s mark). The locks and barrels are marked “Barbar” and the barrels are marked “London” with pre-1813 London proofs. This is an excellent set of American Revolution period British pistols. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels are 9 inches. Calibers: .62 Flintlock Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
