Beautiful THIEME & SCHLEGELMILCH 3 Barrel Sidelock
Here we present a C&R German Thieme & Schlegelmilch Three Barrel Drilling with two 16 Gauge barrels and one rifled at 7mm, made in Suhl, Germany in the early 20th Century. A “drilling”, which is German for triplet, normally consists of two matching smoothbore barrels and a rifled barrel but may possibly cover a much broader range of shapes and configurations, such as two rifled barrels and one smoothbore, three smoothbores, or three rifled barrels.
There were several other major manufacturers of drillings, including Sauer & Sohn, Merkel, Simson & Company, and several others that made drillings. Since many drillings were made by small manufacturers, each maker would pick whichever layout they preferred, or whatever layout the customer ordered. The most common layout was like this one, a side-by-side shotgun with a centerfire rifled barrel centered on the bottom.
The overall condition is near fine. Nicely refinished barrels. This drilling was formerly chambered and proofed for 12 gauge and 9.3mm but the shotgun bores have been sleeved to 16 gauge while the rifled bore measures 6.5mm. The following are measurements of the chamber that may help identify the cartridge: rim thickness .056”; rim diameter .516”; base diameter .428”. The actions are excellent. The bores are bright and smooth on top and well rifled on bottom. The stock is in great shape—the butt stock has been nicely refinished. Very nice horn trigger guard. Numbers match.
