This exact musket is shown and discussed in U.S. Military Shoulder Arms, Vol. 3 page 105 by George Moller in relation to brazed bolster conversions of the Confederate states, and is noted as “believed to have been altered by Daniel C. Hodgkins for the state of Georgia.” This was a more refined method by which to update obsolete flintlock arms. It entailed deleting the flash pan and frizzen hardware from the exterior of the lock, replacing the flintlock jaws with a hammer, and installing a nipple bolster at the old vent. Moller notes that this was preferable to the cone-in-barrel alterations as well as low cost. The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is clear and remains in good shape for its age. Solid stock contains an average amount of wear (minor dents and dings). “US” is marked on the butt plate tang and lock. “1818” dated lock. “SM Co.” is marked on the left barrel flat. Large initials “LG” are carved into the butt stock. The leather sling and bayonet are in nice shape. A very interesting musket updated just in time for the American Civil War! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 42 inches. Caliber: .69 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
