In 1875 Gilbert Harrington and former Frank Wesson employee, William Augustus Richardson, formed the new Harrington & Richardson Company. In 1888 the firm was incorporated as The Harrington & Richardson Arms Company. Their original capital investment was $75,000. Harrington was president, Richardson was treasurer, and George F. Brooks was secretary. This 5-shot revolver would have been ideal to keep in one’s waistband or holster for self-defense in the turbulent early 20th Century. In fact, in one famous incident, Alessandro Berardelli was an armed guard transporting the Slater-Morrill Shoe Company payroll in Braintree, Massachusetts on April 15, 1920 when he and another employee were ambushed, robbed and killed. Berardelli was carrying an H&R .38 revolver like this one. Two Italian immigrant anarchists, Nicola Sacco & Bartolomeo Vanzetti, were arrested and the guard’s gun recovered from Vanzetti. Both were found guilty, though controversy haunted the convictions and anarchists retaliated by killing scores via bombs, most notably the Wall Street Bombing. These men and select events were memorialized by folk singer Woody Guthrie, who was sympathetic to their cause. Harrington & Richardson’s serial number lookup to determine the year manufactured is unknown on this example. The Model 2 was manufactured between the years of 1889 and 1940, with that being all that is out there. Some research out there says that patent dates of Oct. 4, ’87 and May 14 & Aug 6 ’89 were manufactured between 1889 and 1896. This example has only the Oct. 4, ’87 patent date and a serial number of “2218” making it very likely that this revolver was probably manufactured in either 1889 or 1890. But again, because of the lack of information available, this example must be listed as C&R. The overall condition is excellent. Original nickel finish has ben preserved. Excellent action. Shiny, bright bore. Sharp markings. Fine grips, as they showcase little to no handling wear. Numbers match. Correct period box included. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic.
