Description: Boxlocks - As stated on two places on this gun, Henry Atkin formerly worked for James Purdey. He then went on to become one of the better known of the smaller London gun makers. A funny story, it is said that James Purdey sued William Evans and Henry Atkin for using their name on their competitors\' guns but the court case was said to be very short as the defense immediately provided to the magistrate an advert from James Purdey declaring him being formerly of Mantons. Case closed. This gun was completed in 1899. It features the higher end English boxlock action which have over-hanging safety sears. The 30" steel barrels have excellent wall thickness and a great choke choice. This gun has seen full restoration with new barrel black, new action case hardening, and new oil finish on the wood. The cost of all the work far exceeds what we are asking for the gun. For many years in America 2 1/2" shells were not even heard of let alone available so many English guns had their chambers lengthened to 2 3/4" by American gunsmiths. This gun is an example of that. The proof marks are for 2.5" and the chambers measure 2 3/4". *** Note: To see this gun with high resolution photos and a zoom-in feature, go to the vintagedoubles main site and search for the gun ID: 5018 or browse the main site to see our full gun collection. |
